Dawn

All Synergy instructors teach exclusively at our studio. They are required to hold a current certification in a mind/body discipline from a nationally accredited organization, a current CPR certification, current professional liability insurance, and a minimum of 100 hours of teaching in their chosen discipline.

“You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga, you do yoga to become flexible.”

In 2013, Dawn completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Nashville, Tennessee, under the direction of Cortni Saunders of Mindful Motion Yoga Studio and Nicole Cyrille of Yoga Harmony. Dawn completed a 500-hour yoga teacher training program in 2016, studying under the direction of Cyndi Lee of Om Yoga at Yoga Goodness Studio in Lynchburg, Virginia. She has RYT-500 status with the Yoga Alliance.

In her personal practice Dawn enjoys the Hot yoga series, restorative yoga, and she loves vinyasa flow with an emphasis on slow movements and long holds. “There are benefits in all types of yoga,” she says, “and they are done for different reasons, and for different people. Find what works for you and practice what resonates in your life.” Dawn believes it is important to listen to your body and do what it needs at that time, and this is reflected in her teaching of classes and private sessions at Synergy.  “Sometimes you want strength and push, and sometimes you don’t. Ultimately, it is about finding balance and respect for where you are at this moment in time. Yoga gives me that.”

Dawn always enjoyed walking, just dabbled in aerobics and Jazzercize over the years, and came to yoga as a not-very-athletic 47 year old looking for ways to relieve stress and feel better. In 2008, after experiencing her first yoga session at Synergy, something ‘clicked’. She states that yoga as a way of living the journey of life resonated with her. “The sum of all that yoga teaches, and the benefits gained from time on my mat have helped me to find steadiness and ease in my daily journey. Yoga has helped me to find strength, body acceptance and calmness that I carry with me off the mat. I want to help others on their journey to find the benefits that practice can add to their life.”

Continued practice led to study with Rebecca Dennis of Laughing Bodies, Carrie Hensley developer of Rewind Yoga (a clinical research-based program specifically designed for practicioners age 55 and over), Mary Pafford, Anna Guest-Jelley, developer of Curvy Yoga, and Cyndi Lee of Om Yoga.

Dawn has been practicing for 33 years as a Registered Nurse with a BS in Nursing, and has worked at Cookeville Regional Medical Center since 1997. She has a keen interest in yoga as a help to aging well and feeling the best you can in the body you have right now at this moment. Dawn is a life-long knitter. She enjoys sewing, quiltmaking, hand-dyeing, reading, and even dabbles in jewelry making.

“I view Yoga as a means of self care to keep one comfortable in the  physical body as the years move forward in life,” says Dawn, “it is more than a physical practice—the practice on your mat gives you strength that you carry with you in your daily life and you simply feel better. Who doesn’t want to feel better?”
